1.Deception in Love

Mixed media

Unit 4 Art Making and Exhibiting

Coco’s mixed media sculpture examines the relationship between love and deception which she had previously explored in her artworks from unit 3. She chose to create a dollhouse in order to deceive viewers on what was actually happening behind the walls of the house. This is evident through the various rooms displayed in the dollhouse, each relating to one of the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.Coco’s took inspiration from Laure Prouvost, an artist who created their piece from garbage, yet the artwork was still elegant and simplistic. Coco employed a similar technique by using discarded items and transforming them into furniture for her artwork. This added to the theme of deception as the furniture was now not as it seemed. Throughout the house she was incorporated shades of red to symbolise not only love but also hate.

Throughout the piece, the artist has made small references to her previous artworks, such as including heart imagery and roses. In every room of the dollhouse a certain feeling is explored through each object making the story behind the piece livelier and unique. She has purposely left the exterior of the dollhouse its natural colour to deceive viewers into believing the house is normal when really, it’s more complex on the inside. As the viewer peers into the house, it is apparent that there is more depth to the artwork in terms of love. This is meant to make them feel confused and intrigued at what is occurring within the home.
