Woodblock prints on fabric
Unit 4 Art Making and Exhibiting
“Crowd of faces” intended to capture his subjects’ raw emotions and insecurities through woodblock printing. Exploring the theme of being an outsider through this artwork, by producing a large-scale collage of portraits that visually emulate a crowd of faces. The artist printed each portrait multiple times, using repetition of each of the prints to remove the personal connection and individuality of each of the subjects depicted in the carvings. The symbol of a crowd explores the idea of being observed or exposed, while simultaneously feeling isolated. The medium of woodblock printing is used to capture the raw emotion of each subject through the harsh and rough visual style it produces, further exploring the idea of feeling exposed. The portraits were printed onto a large-scale banner as banners are a symbolise protests and crowds. The blank and often judgemental expressions depicted on the faces of the subjects leaves the viewer feeling observed and judged. Alongside this, the personal connection between the artist and the people depicted in the artwork intends to further isolate the viewer from the work, making them feel like an outsider.
